Illinois Driver's License Guide

How Do You Renew an Illinois Driver's License by Safe Driver?

Safe Driver Renewal lets eligible drivers renew by mail, Internet, or phone instead of visiting a facility, but only with a clean record, an age between 21 and 78, and a set of affirmations about your record and health.

The Illinois rule in one table

| Program | Safe Driver Renewal, remote renewal by mail, Internet, or phone | | Age window | 21 to 78. Drivers under 21 or over 78 cannot renew online | | Record test | Record devoid of traffic convictions or mandatory-revocation offenses | | Notice | Eligibility notice mailed about 90 days before expiration | | Fee, 21 to 68 | 30 dollars | | Fee, other ages | 18 to 20: 5 dollars. 69 to 80: 5 dollars. 81 to 86: 2 dollars. 87 and older: free | | Phone and Internet | A service-provider processing fee applies on top of the license fee |

What makes Illinois different

Illinois is the age window state for remote renewal, and the window moved. Older guides still quote 22 to 74, but the current rule, 92 Illinois Administrative Code 1030.25, amended effective May 24, 2024, makes drivers under 21 or over 78 ineligible for online renewal. The usable window is 21 to 78. Do not use the old 22 to 74 figure.

The second Illinois difference is how long the ineligibility list runs. Beyond age, online renewal is closed to commercial drivers with a hazmat endorsement, licenses expired over 1 year, drivers whose last renewal was remote, expirations over 1 year away, drivers who need a medical or vision report, school bus permit holders, drivers with a crash notation, restricted local license holders, drivers under 26 who have not met Selective Service requirements, temporary-presence documentation holders, drivers whose Social Security number cannot be verified, Sex Offender reporting cases, drivers with no suitable image on file, and drivers 74 and older with a J50 or J51 restriction. Remote renewal also requires affirmations: no new corrective lenses since the last renewal, not suspended or revoked, no license in another state, no loss of consciousness or impairing condition, no impairing drugs or alcohol, no court mental-disability finding or commitment in the last 4 years, and name and gender unchanged.

The process, step by step

  1. Watch for the eligibility notice mailed about 90 days before expiration.
  2. Confirm you are aged 21 to 78 with a record devoid of traffic convictions or mandatory-revocation offenses, and that none of the online ineligibility conditions apply.
  3. Renew by mail, Internet, or phone, making the required affirmations about your record, health, and identity.
  4. Pay the age-banded fee, 30 dollars for most adults 21 to 68, plus the service-provider processing fee on phone or Internet applications.
