How Do You Renew an Expired Vehicle Registration in Colorado?

Colorado gives you a full grace month after your registration expires, then charges $25 per month or part of a month, $10 per month for a trailer, capped at $100 per instance. The one hard limit is online: renewal online is not possible if the registration is expired more than 13 months, an emissions test is required, insurance is not in the state database, or there are express toll holds.

The Colorado expired-renewal rule in one table

Question Colorado expired-renewal rule
Renewing expired Renew via MyDMV Colorado or a county motor vehicle office (or kiosk where the county participates). Online renewal is NOT possible if the registration is expired more than 13 months, an emissions test is required, insurance is not in the MIIDB, or there are express toll holds , then renew through the local county motor vehicle office.
Late fee $25 per month or portion of a month following expiration of the registration period or grace month; $10 per month for trailers; shall not exceed $100 per instance (C.R.S. 42-3-112). Example given: registration period expires Dec 31, 2023, January 2024 is the grace month, late fees begin Feb 1, 2024. Exemptions include military deployment, Acts of God, weather delays, office closures/furloughs, medical hardships, IT failures, farm vehicles, stolen vehicles.
Re-registration point Not stated beyond the 13-month online-renewal limit; no re-registration threshold was stated on the pages opened.
Driving expired Not stated for an expired renewal on the official pages opened in full. The Expiring Temporary Tags page states expired temporary tags risk tickets/fines from law enforcement (initial-registration context, not renewal).

What makes Colorado different when you are late

The worked example from the Department of Revenue makes the clock concrete: if the registration period expires December 31, January is the grace month and late fees begin February 1. Exemptions from the late fee include military deployment, acts of God, weather delays, office closures and furloughs, medical hardships, IT failures, farm vehicles, and stolen vehicles. The fee clock counts part-months as full months, so a renewal a few days into a month costs the whole month.

Past 13 months expired, the county motor vehicle office is the route: online renewal is blocked, and the pages read do not state whether renewal remains possible in person or by mail after that point or what that process is. Do not drive on the expired registration while sorting it out; the pages read state no fine or penalty for driving expired in this context, and this guide does not invent one.

The process, step by step

  1. Use the grace month. The full month after expiry carries no late fee. Renew through MyDMV Colorado or your county motor vehicle office inside it.
  2. Count months after the grace month. The fee is $25 per month or part of a month, $10 for a trailer, capped at $100 per instance.
  3. Check the online blocks before you start. Online renewal is unavailable more than 13 months expired, when an emissions test is required, when insurance is not in the database, or with express toll holds. In any of those cases, go to the county office.
  4. Claim an exemption if one applies. Military deployment and the other listed exemptions excuse the late fee with the right proof; ask the county office what it needs.
  5. Complete emissions testing where it applies. An emissions test is still required to register where testing applies.
