How Do You Renew an Expired Vehicle Registration in Pennsylvania?

PennDOT states the renewal channels and no late-fee rule on its current renewal page. A 2011 report stated different rules; this guide dates that report and does not present it as current.

What makes Pennsylvania different when you are late

A PennDOT-sponsored research report dated April 18, 2011, quoting the Motor Vehicle Code as it then stood, stated that Pennsylvania charged no late fee for renewing an expired registration, and stated a fine of $75 or double the registration fee, whichever is greater, for driving an unregistered vehicle, with an exception for a vehicle previously registered in Pennsylvania within 60 days. The current PennDOT renewal page states neither fact. This guide does not present the 2011 statements as current rules. Check the current PennDOT fee schedule and the Motor Vehicle Code before relying on either figure.

The process, step by step

  1. Pick a channel. The channels are listed below; the pages read state no requirement to hold a renewal notice.
  2. Work out the late fee before you pay. The late-fee rule for this state is in the table above. Where the pages state no fee, do not assume one from an unofficial guide.
  3. Check the online limit. If the registration has been expired for a long time, confirm the online route is still open; the table states the limit where one exists.
  4. Do not drive on the expired registration while sorting it out. The driving consequences stated on the pages read are in the table above, and this guide invents none.
