How Much Does a U.S. Passport Cost?

What makes the fee schedule different

In-person applications pay two fees, and renewals pay one. The application fee goes to the U.S. Department of State. The facility acceptance fee goes to the acceptance facility for verifying identification and mailing the application. Mail and online renewals pay only the State fee, with no acceptance fee. That split is the whole schedule: every total on this page is the sum of the two stated fees, because the State fees page prints no total column.

The second difference is what never gets refunded. The application fee and the execution fee are never refundable, by law, even if no passport is issued. The 60 dollar expedite fee is refundable only if the application was not processed within the stated timeframe, on a refund request. No refund covers other fees or travel expenses.

How to pay

Pay the application fee by check (personal, certified, cashier's, or traveler's) or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State, with the applicant name and date of birth in the memo. The 35 dollar facility acceptance fee goes to the facility, and its accepted payment methods vary by facility. Renewal by mail uses a check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. From Canada, the check or money order must draw on a U.S. bank in U.S. dollars. Renewal online uses a credit or debit card. At a passport agency, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover), debit and prepaid Visa or Mastercard not linked to a line of credit or bank account, and contactless Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are accepted.

Add the 60 dollar expedite fee to the application fee, and the 26 dollar and 87 cent delivery fee as a separate check or money order where the form directs. Do not submit a pre-paid return envelope. Faster sending at the acceptance facility uses USPS Priority Mail Express, with the price varying by location. No passport fee includes the photo. Photo cost is a vendor or facility charge, not a government fee.

A name change carries no flat fee on the State fees page. The page states the amount depends on the situation and points to the State fee calculator. Do not merge that with the data-error correction, which is 0 dollars on the same page.

The figures here feed the passport fee calculator, which totals a case from age, document, and track. For when each fee applies, see the renewal track and the first-time track. The book-or-card choice changes the total; compare the passport card and book. For every passport track side by side, see the U.S. Passport Guides by Situation directory.
