How Do You Change Your Address in Illinois?
Notify the Secretary of State within 10 days of a move, but the license and the registration go to different places, and the corrected license and the corrected registration card are two different documents with two different fees.
The Illinois rule in one table
| License clock | Notify within 10 days of changing name or address, under 625 ILCS 5/6-116 | | License route | Driver services facility visit, or letter to Driver Services Department, Central Services, 2701 South Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, IL 62723. The online address-change form also notifies Driver Services | | Corrected license | Driver services facility visit plus 5 dollars | | Registration route | Letter stating license plate number, name, old address, and new address to Vehicle Records Processing Division, License Correction Section, 501 South 2nd Street, Room 624, Springfield, IL 62756, or the online Address Change Form | | Registration fee | No fee for the address change itself | | Corrected Registration ID Card | 3 dollars, one card | | Name change | License or ID name changes must be completed at a driver services facility | | Commercial license | A commercial driver's license holder must obtain a corrected license within 30 days of any change |
What makes Illinois different
Illinois is the two documents, two fees state for address changes, and the two agency answers that price a corrected card are describing one card, not two. The corrected Registration ID Card costs 3 dollars. The corrected driver's license is a different document and costs 5 dollars. Conflating them is the common error in secondary guides.
The second Illinois difference is the two destinations. The license notice goes to Driver Services, by facility visit, by letter to the Dirksen Parkway address, or through the online form, and a new license reflecting the change requires a facility visit. The registration notice goes to the Vehicle Records Processing Division, License Correction Section, by letter or through the online Address Change Form, and the address change itself carries no fee. A commercial driver's license holder must obtain a corrected license within 30 days of any change, a longer clock than the 10-day notice clock, so do not merge the two.
The process, step by step
- Notify within 10 days of the move, with your old and new addresses.
- For the license, visit a driver services facility, write to Driver Services at 2701 South Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, IL 62723, or use the online address-change form. A new license reflecting the change needs a facility visit and costs 5 dollars.
- For the registration, write to the Vehicle Records Processing Division, License Correction Section, 501 South 2nd Street, Room 624, Springfield, IL 62756, with your plate number, name, old address, and new address, or use the online Address Change Form. No fee for the change itself; a corrected Registration ID Card costs 3 dollars.
- Complete a license or ID name change at a driver services facility. Commercial license holders must obtain a corrected license within 30 days.
