How Do You Renew Vehicle Registration in Michigan?
Michigan registration runs on 1 year or 2 years (two-year option only for renewing passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans owned or leased by an individual), and the pages that govern it are the www.michigan.gov renewal pages. Here is the process, step by step, with the grace rule and the late fee exactly as the official pages state them.
The Michigan rule in one table
| Question | Michigan rule |
|---|---|
| Term | 1 year or 2 years (two-year option only for renewing passenger vehicles, motorcycles, pickups, and vans owned or leased by an individual) |
| Expiry | Owner's birthday in most cases; for individually owned passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and vans the plate expires on the owner's birthday (either owner's birthday if jointly owned). |
| Grace period | None. SOS states: 'There is no grace period under Michigan law.' If the birthday falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the owner has until the next business day to renew without penalty. |
| Late fee | Added $10 fee if registration, tab, and plate are not renewed on time. Renewal fees for expired plates are not prorated and the amount on the renewal notice does not change if renewed after expiry. |
| Renewal channels | in-person: Secretary of State branch office; kiosk: Secretary of State self-service station; mail: Renewal by Mail Unit, Michigan Department of State, 7064 Crowner Drive, Lansing, MI 48980; online: Online Services (Secretary of State) / Vehicle Services |
| Inspection | No emissions or safety inspection requirement tied to renewal stated on the official SOS pages reviewed. |
| What you need | Old registration for each registration (or plate configuration); Proof of valid Michigan no-fault insurance for each registration (required at office or by mail; electronic verification may remove the need online/at self-service stations); Driver's license; Payment: cash, check, money order, or Discover/MasterCard/Visa debit or credit card; License plate number and last four digits of VIN (for some online/self-service renewals, per related SOS pages) |
| Renewal vs. transfer | Renewal keeps the same owner on the same title, while a title transfer changes the owner. They use different forms, different deadlines, and different fees. |
What makes Michigan different
Michigan states its rule bluntly: there is no grace period under Michigan law. Plates and tabs expire on the owner's birthday, and if the birthday falls on a weekend or legal holiday, renewal without penalty is allowed until the next business day. That is the whole allowance. Renewal is possible up to six months early, so the practical answer to the missing grace period is to renew early.
The fee is the other Michigan distinction. For 1984-or-newer passenger vehicles and light trucks the fee is a percentage of the manufacturer's suggested retail price at first titling, reduced by a percentage for the following three years with no further reduction after that. For vehicles older than 1984 the fee is based on weight. A late renewal adds a $10 fee, renewal fees for expired plates are not prorated, and the amount on the renewal notice does not change if you renew after expiry. Plates that are 10 years old or older must be replaced upon renewal.
The process, step by step
- Note the birthday expiry. Your plate expires on the owner's birthday, or the next business day if the birthday falls on a weekend or legal holiday.
- Renew up to six months early. Online Services, mail, a self-service station, or a Secretary of State branch office all handle renewals.
- Have insurance proof ready. Proof of valid Michigan no-fault insurance is required at an office or by mail for each registration; electronic verification may remove the need online or at self-service stations.
- If you are late, expect the $10 added fee. It applies when the registration, tab, and plate are not renewed on time, and the notice amount does not change after expiry.
- Check the plate age. A plate 10 years old or older must be replaced when you renew.

This page explains how the process works and what the official rules say. It is general information, not legal advice. For a dispute about your specific situation, talk to your state motor vehicle agency.
Conflict noted on this page: Self-service station service fee is stated as $4.25 per item on the Vehicle tabs and license plates FAQ page and as $3.95 per item on the Disability plate page snippet in search results; the $3.95 figure was not read on an opened page, so the FAQ figure ($4.25) is carried and the discrepancy is flagged here rather than resolved.
Not carried on this page: Exact fee percentages/formula for the MSRP-based fee (SOS states the basis and the three-year reduction pattern but gives no percentages); Any inspection requirement (none stated on pages reviewed; do not assert Michigan has no inspections at all beyond renewal); Self-service station fee amount (see conflicts: $4.25 vs $3.95).
