How Do You Renew Vehicle Registration in North Carolina?

North Carolina registration runs on 1 year (annual renewal), and the pages that govern it are the www.ncdot.gov renewal pages. Here is the process, step by step, with the grace rule and the late fee exactly as the official pages state them.

The North Carolina rule in one table

Question North Carolina rule
Term 1 year (annual renewal)
Expiry Not stated as a single rule on the NCDMV pages opened; registration expires on the date shown on the registration/sticker ('valid through' date). The NCDMV renewals page states a vehicle may lawfully be operated up to 15 days after expiry (see grace_period).
Grace period 15-day lawful-operation period: NCDMV states 'you can legally operate your vehicle up to 15 days after your registration expires (referred to as the valid through date)'. This grace period does NOT apply to late fees: G.S. 20-88.03(d) states the 15-day grace period in G.S. 20-66(g) shall not apply to any late fee under that section.
Late fee Tiered late fee under G.S. 20-88.03: $15 if expired less than one month, $20 if expired one month or more but less than two months, $25 if expired two months or more (cap $25). NCDMV renewals page summarizes this as a late fee up to $25 on all renewals paid after the expiration date, plus interest on late renewals (5% for the remainder of the month following expiry, then 0.75% per month until taxes/fees are paid). Late fee waived for deployed Armed Forces members who renew within 30 days after deployment ends, and no late fee if the plate was surrendered on or before expiry.
Renewal channels in-person: License plate agency (NCDMV); kiosk: Self-service kiosk (via NCDMV / myNCDMV); mail: Mail renewal card + payment to NCDMV Vehicle Services, PO Box 29620, Raleigh, NC 27626-0620; online: myNCDMV / PayIt (payments.ncdot.gov)
Inspection Yes. A motor vehicle must pass an annual safety inspection before renewal; inspection no more than 90 days before the license plate/registration expires. Vehicles registered in 19 North Carolina counties must also pass an emissions inspection at the same time. Failure to inspect blocks renewal. Vehicles more than 30 years old are exempt from the annual safety inspection; antique-plated vehicles 30+ years old are exempt from both safety and emissions inspections.
What you need License plate number; Last five digits of the vehicle title number; Current insurance information; Passing state inspection completed no more than 90 days before expiry (before renewal in every channel); Payment for combined registration fee + property tax (online: PayIt $3 per transaction + 1.85% card processing fee)
Renewal vs. transfer Renewal keeps the same owner on the same title, while a title transfer changes the owner. They use different forms, different deadlines, and different fees.

What makes North Carolina different

North Carolina runs renewal and property tax as one transaction. Tag and Tax Together means the renewal pays the combined vehicle registration and property tax bill together, and registration cannot be renewed until the property tax is paid. The late-fee interest runs on the tax side too: 5 percent for the remainder of the month following expiry, then 0.75 percent per month until the taxes and fees are paid.

The 15-day rule is the one most often misread. A vehicle may lawfully be operated up to 15 days after the registration expires, but that grace period does not apply to late fees: the statute says so expressly. The late fee itself is tiered at $15 if expired less than one month, $20 at one month or more but less than two months, and $25 at two months or more, capped at $25. A passing safety inspection completed no more than 90 days before expiry is required before renewal, with an emissions inspection added in 19 counties. Since October 1, 2026, no physical license plate sticker or printed registration card is issued; registration is digital.

The process, step by step

  1. Get inspected first. A passing safety inspection no more than 90 days before expiry is required before renewal, plus an emissions inspection in the 19 emissions counties. Failure to inspect blocks renewal.
  2. Pay the combined bill. Renewal through myNCDMV, a kiosk, a license plate agency, or by mail pays registration and property tax together. Online payment carries a $3 transaction fee plus a 1.85 percent card processing fee.
  3. Do not confuse the 15 days with a fee holiday. You may drive up to 15 days past expiry, but the late fee and tax interest still accrue from expiry.
  4. Know the two waivers. No late fee applies to deployed Armed Forces members who renew within 30 days after deployment ends, or if the plate was surrendered on or before expiry.
  5. Download your registration. With no sticker or printed card issued, a copy of the digital registration can be downloaded or printed free.
