How Do You Renew Vehicle Registration in Texas?
Texas is the grace-period state in this set: you have five working days after expiration before driving can draw a ticket, and the base fee is a flat $50.75 for most cars. The wrinkle is emissions testing — still required in 17 counties after safety inspections ended in 2025. Here is the process, step by step.
The Texas rule in one table
| Question | Texas rule |
|---|---|
| Validity | One year |
| Grace period | Yes — Texas gives you five working days after your vehicle registration expires before driving can draw a ticket, under Transportation Code § 502.407 |
| Working days | Weekends and legal holidays do not count against the five days |
| Base fee | The base fee is $50.75 for cars and light pickup trucks under 6,000 pounds, plus county fees and a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee |
| County fees | Local fees vary by county, up to $31.50 |
| Emissions counties (17) | Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson |
| Safety inspection | Safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles ended January 1, 2025, but a passing emissions test is still required before renewal in 17 counties. |
| Renewal vs. transfer | No — renewal keeps the same owner on the same title, while a title transfer changes the owner. They use different forms, different deadlines, and different fees. |
What makes Texas different
Texas is the only state in this set where the grace period is written into the statute in working days: five working days after expiration, weekends and holidays excluded, before driving with the old sticker becomes an offense under § 502.407. California gives zero days; Florida's delinquent fee starts on the 11th day of the following month. Do not confuse the grace period with a fee holiday, though — your new registration period still runs 12 months from the original expiration month, so renewing late does not buy you extra time.
The 2025 inspection change is the other Texas distinction. The old "Two Steps, One Sticker" safety inspection is gone for non-commercial vehicles, replaced by a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee rolled into renewal — but emissions testing survives in the 17 counties listed above, and your vehicle must pass one before you can renew there.
The process, step by step
- Check whether you are in an emissions county. Brazoria, Collin, Dallas, Denton, El Paso, Ellis, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Johnson, Kaufman, Montgomery, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, and Williamson. If so, get the emissions test done — you have a 90-day window before expiration, and the result links electronically to your record.
- Confirm your insurance is current. Proof of current liability insurance is verified electronically; if your insurer has not reported coverage, you may be asked to show the policy.
- Renew online, by mail, or in person. Renew online through the TxDMV portal with your license plate number and the last four digits of your VIN, by mail using the form on your renewal notice, or in person at your county tax assessor-collector's office. The base fee is $50.75 for cars and light pickup trucks under 6,000 pounds, plus county fees and a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee.
- If you are already expired, use the grace period — then stop counting on it. Yes — Texas gives you five working days after your vehicle registration expires before driving can draw a ticket, under Transportation Code § 502.407. Renew inside that window; after it, a citation is on the table.
- Keep the receipt until the sticker arrives. Your registration period still runs 12 months from the original expiration month, so a late renewal does not extend your next deadline — diary the original month, not the renewal date.
Renewing is not transferring: if the owner is changing, you need the title-transfer process instead — see How to Transfer a Car Title in Texas. If the title itself is lost, stolen, or destroyed, replace it first: How to Replace a Lost Car Title in Texas.
