What Do I Bring to Renew Your Registration?

There is no national bring-list, because there is no national counter. Texas takes you to the county tax assessor-collector's office with three items. New York takes you to the DMV with a six-item renewal list on form MV-82.1. California takes you nowhere: the DMV states it does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, and renewal runs online, at a kiosk, with a business partner, or by mail. Bring the list for the state and channel you will actually use.

Texas: three items at the county tax office

Take your registration renewal notice, proof of current liability insurance, and valid government-issued identification to your county's tax assessor-collector office or an approved substation. That is the whole in-person list on the Texas.gov page. No title appears in it, and no inspection report appears in the in-person list — the inspection report copy appears only in the mail list, for the 17 emissions counties, and a passing emissions inspection must precede renewal in the designated counties. Payment is not named in the in-person sentence; confirm the accepted payment methods with the county office before you go.

New York: the six-item renewal list

Form MV-82.1, the form New York uses to register and title vehicles, states what renewal requires:

  1. A completed Vehicle Registration Renewal invitation (MV-3 or OP-3). If it is unavailable, or information must be corrected, a completed MV-82 plus proof of identity.
  2. Proof of identity: a current photo NYS driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID card, or the ID-82 proofs.
  3. Limousine and altered-vehicle renewals are mail-only and cannot be processed at a DMV office.
  4. A current valid NYS Insurance Identification Card in the registrant's name, or the for-hire, DOT permit, or self-insurance alternative stated on page 3.
  5. Proof of inspection, if required.
  6. Payment of the fee: cash, check, mobile pay, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover), with the credit card holder present.

No proof-of-ownership item appears in the renewal list. Inspection proof is stated as "if required" — this page does not state that inspection proof is always required at renewal, and the form's inspection text addresses first registration. Confirm the renewal inspection-currency rule with the DMV if your inspection is not current.

California: no counter service

The CA DMV states plainly that it does not provide counter service for vehicle registration renewal, and that renewal must be done online, at a DMV kiosk, with a DMV business partner, or by mail. The renewal page's "Before You Begin" list is online-oriented: license plate number, last five digits of the VIN or HIN, and payment information. Cash is payable at DMV kiosks at select DMV office and retail locations. No primary bring-list for a business-partner visit was found on the pages read, and secondary bring-lists are not carried here. Frame a California renewal as kiosk, business partner, mail, or online — never as bringing documents to a DMV counter.
