How Do You Renew an Expired Vehicle Registration in New York?
New York has no agency late fee for expired registration. The cost of lateness is a court fine: $75 to $300 or up to 15 days in jail for driving unregistered, with the fine floor dropping to $40 if the failure to renew concerns a registration that was valid within 60 days. And online renewal closes once the registration has been expired more than one year.

What makes New York different when you are late
The one-year line is the hinge of the whole process. The state's online renewal service states you cannot renew a registration online if it is suspended, revoked, expired for more than one year, or for a vehicle that has not been inspected in the past 12 months. Past one year, you must re-register, and the inspection must be current first: a vehicle that has not been inspected in the past 12 months cannot be renewed online at all.
The fine text comes from Vehicle and Traffic Law section 401, subdivision 18: a violation of subdivision one is punishable by a fine of not less than $75 nor more than $300, or imprisonment for not more than 15 days, or both, except that if the violation consists of failure to renew a registration which was valid within 60 days, the fine is not less than $40. No surcharge amount is stated on this page, because no surcharge amount was verified on an official page read for this guide. Members of the Armed Forces returning from active military duty may have more time to renew; the details were not opened for this guide.
The process, step by step
- Get inspected first. A vehicle not inspected in the past 12 months cannot be renewed online. The inspection must be current before renewal.
- Renew online if you are inside one year. Online renewal stays open until the registration has been expired more than one year, with a current mailing address on file.
- Past one year, re-register. Beyond one year expired, online renewal is closed and the vehicle must be re-registered.
- Do not drive unregistered. The fine is $75 to $300 or up to 15 days in jail, with a $40 floor for a registration valid within 60 days.
- Armed Forces members should ask about extra time. Returning service members may have more time to renew; confirm with the DMV.
