What makes Oregon different
Oregon is the changed administrator state. The program transitioned to the Oregon State Treasury in 2021 and now lives at unclaimed.oregon.gov. Older Department of State Lands rules and checklists are historical, not the current claim checklist, and should not be used to prepare a claim.
The second Oregon difference is proactive return. Under Checks Without Claims, the Treasury returns verified property without a claim. Its 2023 initiative returned more than 10 million dollars to more than 18,000 individuals over three phases, covering property reported in 2018 to 2020. It was the largest mass disbursement in the program and its first since the transition to the Treasury. A claim is still the route for property the program has not already returned.
The process, step by step
- Search for and claim money on unclaimed.oregon.gov, any time after learning the property was reported to the Treasurer.
- Submit a completed Property Claim Form with its required attachments, online with document uploads where an original is not required, or by mail or delivery with the assigned claim number.
- If filing by mail, send the completed form with attachments to the Oregon Unclaimed Property Program, Oregon State Treasury, 867 Hawthorne Ave SE, Salem, OR 97301-5241.
- Wait for program staff to verify your connection to the property and approve the claim.
Claiming in the other states
Unclaimed property rules follow the same shape in every state, but the portal, the proof, and the wait change at the state line.
