How to Export Mailchimp Data to JSON

Start with the honest fact: Mailchimp does not export JSON. Its native exports are CSV spreadsheets, and JSON enters the picture only when you convert that CSV, call the API, or pay a connector to produce JSON files for you.

The JSON routes in one table

Route What it takes What you get
CSV → JSON conversion A Mailchimp CSV export + a converter JSON built from the CSV, in your browser
Mailchimp API An API key + code JSON straight from Mailchimp's servers
Paid connector (Catchr) A Catchr account + a scheduled export job CSV or JSON files written to Google Cloud Storage

What makes the JSON route different

Every other page in this cluster starts with a button Mailchimp actually provides. This one starts with an absence: No. Mailchimp's native exports are CSV spreadsheets — JSON is not a native export format, so every JSON route below converts from CSV, calls the API, or uses a paid connector. That distinction decides which route fits. Conversion is free and immediate but frozen at export time. The API is live and exact but needs an API key, the data-center server prefix from that key, and code to call it. A paid connector automates the whole thing but puts a subscription between you and your own data. None of these is "the JSON export button," because that button does not exist.

The process, step by step

  1. The simplest route: convert the CSV. Export the CSV from Mailchimp, then convert it: paste it into the free Mailchimp CSV to JSON Converter on this site, which converts it in your browser and returns JSON. The tool is the Mailchimp CSV to JSON Converter. Your data never leaves your browser in this route.
  2. The developer route: call the API. Yes. A GET request to the Mailchimp Marketing API reports endpoint, /reports/{campaign_id}, returns that campaign's report as JSON — but it needs an API key and code, so it is the developer route, not a download button. Create the API key in your Mailchimp account settings (Account → Extras → API keys, per Airbyte's setup guide), take the server prefix from the key's suffix, and call the reports endpoint on your server host, https://<server-prefix>.api.mailchimp.com/3.0, with path reports/{campaign_id}, using that key.
  3. The automated route: pay a connector to write JSON files. Yes, as a secondary option: Catchr's Mailchimp export to Google Cloud Storage lets you choose CSV or JSON as the file format for scheduled export jobs. Connect Mailchimp in Catchr, add Google Cloud Storage with a service-account key and bucket, build the data stream, and pick JSON as the format.
  4. Do not overpay for a one-off conversion. If you need JSON once, route 1 does it free in the browser; reserve the API route for recurring pulls and the connector route for scheduled file delivery.
  5. If JSON is only a stepping stone, stop earlier. If your real destination is a spreadsheet, the Excel guide and the Google Sheets guide take the CSV directly — converting to JSON first adds a step for no benefit.

The CSV-native-export fact and the API reports endpoint come from Mailchimp's own documentation: Mailchimp — Download a Campaign Report and Mailchimp Developer — Get campaign report. The API-key location (Account → Extras → API keys) is described in Airbyte's secondary setup guide: Airbyte — Sync Mailchimp data anywhere. The Catchr JSON-file option is described in Catchr's own documentation: Catchr — Export Mailchimp to Google Cloud Storage. Facts verified 2026-10-24. Connector claims here are secondary-source claims and are worded as such — verify pricing and free-trial terms on the connector's own site before paying.

This page explains how the process works and what the official documentation says. It is general information, not advice about your specific account or data — an API key grants access to your Mailchimp account, so treat it like a password and never paste it into a page or file you share.
