How to Transfer a Car Title in Florida

Private-party title transfers in Florida are filed with your county tax collector's office — in Florida, tax collectors act as the FLHSMV's agents for titles. The official fee, form, deadline, and tax rules are below — checked against the state's own pages, not the spam blogs.

What makes Florida different

Florida titles are electronic by default — there may be no paper title at all. The seller 'assigns' the electronic title at the tax collector's office or online, and the $75.25 fee buys the transfer of that electronic record. Ask for the paper print ($2.50) only if you want a physical document; it changes nothing legally. Also note the surtax cap: on a $30,000 car, the county surtax is charged on $5,000, not $30,000.

The transfer, step by step

  1. Get the signed title from the seller. The seller assigns the title to you at the sale — names spelled exactly as on your ID, odometer reading recorded, no blank fields. A title with errors or a missing signature is the number one reason transfers bounce.
  2. Complete the state application: Form HSMV 82040. Bring the assigned title, your ID, and payment.
  3. File at your county tax collector's office — in Florida, tax collectors act as the FLHSMV's agents for titles. Filing office matters in Florida — filing at the wrong level of government (state vs. county) is the most common wasted trip.
  4. Pay the fee and the tax. Fee: $75.25 for the title transfer on an electronic title — add $2.50 if you want a paper title printed, and $2 if a lien is recorded. Tax: 6% state sales tax on the purchase price, plus your county's discretionary sales surtax — but the surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of the price. Tax lawfully paid on the vehicle in another state is credited.
  5. Mind the deadline: Within 30 days of the seller assigning the title to you. After 30 days, a $20 late title fee is added.
  6. Handle inspection if your situation triggers it. No inspection for a Florida-titled vehicle. If the car carries an out-of-state title, the VIN and odometer must be verified first (a law enforcement officer, dealer, or tax collector employee can do it) before Florida will title it.

What it will actually cost

Run your numbers through the Car Title Transfer Cost Estimator — pick your state, enter the purchase price, and it adds the official fee and the state tax rule to give you the walk-in total before you queue. Then compare how the other seven states do it in the Car Title Transfer by State directory.

Renewing is not transferring

If the owner is staying the same and only the registration needs renewing, see Vehicle Registration Renewal in Florida — deadlines, grace periods, and late fees.

If the title itself is lost

If the title itself is lost, stolen, or destroyed, replace it before you transfer or renew. A transfer needs a title to sign over, and a renewal on a lost title stalls at the title number. See How to Replace a Lost Car Title in Florida for the form, the fee, and the lienholder rule.
