How to use this directory
Start with the fee column, then open your state's guide for the parts that decide your total: the tax rule and the inspection trigger. Three warnings from the research behind this table: Colorado's title fee is $7.20 — the $76.50/$87.75 figures online are bundles and other states' numbers; Oregon has no single fee (it is tiered by MPG); and Texas has no single fee either ($28 or $33, by county).
Estimate your walk-in total with the Car Title Transfer Cost Estimator. Check the fee, deadline, form, and odometer rule for the twelve new states with the Title Transfer Requirements Checker. The twelve new states add a $214.50 Wisconsin fee, a $66.75 North Carolina fee plus highway use tax, and four states that state no fee or no deadline.
If the transfer is a gift rather than a sale, see Title Transfer for a Gifted Vehicle.
Title transfer by question
The state guides answer title transfer by state. Car Title Transfer Questions answers it by question: the documents, how long a transfer takes, the fees by state, what happens if the title is never transferred, electronic titles, and the Texas forms in full. Start there when the question arrives stateless, then open the state guide for the filing office and the tax rule.
