Vehicle Process Guide

How Do You Renew Vehicle Registration in Washington?

Washington calls it renewing your tabs, not renewing your registration — and the clock is annual. Your tabs expire every year, and you renew online, by mail, or in person. The catch is not a late fee: the Department of Licensing states no late renewal fee on its renewal page, but unpaid tickets or tolling fees will block your renewal until you pay them. Here is the process, step by step.

The Washington rule in one table

Question Washington rule
Term One year — vehicle tabs expire every year
What it is called Tabs — stickers on the rear license plate showing the expiration month and year
Renewal channels Online through License Express, by mail if you received a renewal notice, or in person at a vehicle licensing office
What blocks renewal Unpaid tickets or tolling fees — renewal is unavailable until those are paid
Late renewal fee stated by DOL None stated by DOL
What to check first Your address on file; update it before renewing if you have moved
Renewal vs. transfer No — renewal keeps the same owner on the same title, while a title transfer changes the owner. They use different forms, different deadlines, and different fees.

What makes Washington different

Washington is the annual-tabs state in this set, and the vocabulary matters: you are not renewing a registration card, you are renewing the tabs on your plate. The term is one year, not two like Oregon or New York. The date comes around twice as often, so it is easier to miss.

The other difference is where the friction sits. California, Colorado, and New York all price lateness in different ways: percentage tiers, a monthly late fee, or a court fine. Washington's renewal page states no late renewal fee at all. What stops you is not a penalty ladder but a block: unpaid tickets or tolling fees. Until those are paid, the renewal itself is unavailable, whatever channel you try. Check for outstanding tickets and tolls before you start, and update your address if you have moved, so you receive the notice and the tabs.

The process, step by step

  1. Check your expiration date and address. Your tabs expire every year; the month and year are on your license plate, and your License Express account shows the exact month, day, and year. If you have moved, update the address on file first.
  2. Clear any blocks. You cannot renew until unpaid tickets or tolling fees are paid. If you do not know what you owe, call the Department of Licensing at 360-902-3900.
  3. Renew online, by mail, or in person. Online renewal runs through License Express; mail renewal follows the renewal notice if you received one; in-person renewal happens at a vehicle licensing office.
  4. Watch for safety recalls on your notice. The Department of Licensing now prints open safety recalls from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on renewal notices. A recall does not stop your renewal. You can still renew, but the recall is worth acting on.
  5. Keep the new tabs until they arrive. Renewal keeps the same owner on the same title; if the owner is changing, you need the title-transfer process instead — see How to Transfer a Car Title in Washington. If the title itself is lost, stolen, or destroyed, replace it first: How to Replace a Lost Car Title in Washington.
