How Do You Export a Mailchimp Segment or Tag?
Exporting a segment, a tag, or a group creates a separate filtered export, not a filtered view of the audience export. Each one is a new export job, with the same in-progress message and completion email as a full audience export, and it covers only the filtered contacts. Here are the three routes, step by step.
The three routes in one table
| What you export | Path | Pop-up and button |
|---|---|---|
| Saved segment | Audience, then the Audience drop-down if you have more than one audience, then the Segments drop-down, then choose the segment, then Export segment | Export segment pop-up, then Export CSV |
| Tag, route A | Audience, then the Tags drop-down, then choose the tag, then Save as segment | Export segment preview pop-up, then Export CSV |
| Tag, route B | Audience, then Tags, then the drop-down next to View for the tag, then Export as CSV | Downloads a CSV of the contacts assigned to that tag, titled with the tag name |
| Group | Audience, then More options, then Groups, then View Group to expand the group, then the number-of-contacts link to view the individual contacts, then Export segment | Export segment preview pop-up, then Export CSV |
What each route shares with the full audience export
Every route starts per audience. If you have more than one audience, use the Audience drop-down first, because a segment, tag, or group belongs to one audience. Every route runs asynchronously: a message says the export is in progress and to expect an email when it is complete. Every export is available in your account for 30 days, through More options, then Export history. Every export is restricted to Owners and Admins. And every filtered export contains only its subset. A tag export with 400 contacts is complete at 400 contacts, even if the audience holds 40,000. The subset is the point.
The tag routes, kept apart
The two tag routes look similar and end in different places, so do not conflate them. Route A runs from the audience page: Tags drop-down, choose the tag, Save as segment, then Export CSV in the preview pop-up. Route B runs from the Tags page: Audience, then Tags, then the drop-down next to View for the tag, then Export as CSV, which downloads a CSV of the contacts assigned to that tag and uses the tag name as the export title. Clicking View alone only displays a segment of contacts with that tag. The export is the separate drop-down action.
The group route, and the groups column that does not exist
Groups are exported through the segment route, not as a column in the audience CSV. The audience CSV lists TAGS as an included column, but groups are not listed as a column. To export a group, expand it under More options, then Groups, then View Group, click the number-of-contacts link to view the individual contacts, then Export segment, then Export CSV in the preview pop-up. If you need group membership in a spreadsheet, this route is the way to get it.
The single-contact export is a different tool
A GDPR data request for one contact does not use the audience export at all. Open the contact profile, then Actions, then Export, and Mailchimp emails a download link when it is ready. The single-contact export is also available from More options, then Export history, then Download CSV next to that contact. A contact in multiple audiences must be exported from each audience individually, because each contact export includes data attached to a specific audience.
