How Do You Export Mailchimp Contacts to Google Sheets?
You do not export directly to Sheets, because Mailchimp offers no native Sheets export and no first-party Mailchimp to Sheets sync was found in the help articles read for this guide. The honest workflow is export the audience as CSV, unzip the download, and import each status CSV into Google Sheets. Here is that workflow, step by step.
The honest statement, up front
Google Sheets is a post-export workflow, not a native Mailchimp export format and not a Mailchimp-documented native sync found in the help articles read for this guide. Mailchimp's own help names Google Sheets as one of the spreadsheet programs people use to open the CSV, and links out to Google's guide for opening a CSV file with Google Sheets. The import steps themselves are Google's documentation, not Mailchimp's text. Third-party connectors that sync Mailchimp to Sheets exist, but they are third-party tools, not Mailchimp features. This guide covers the native export route only.
The workflow, step by step
- Export the audience as CSV. Follow How to Export a Mailchimp Audience to CSV: Audience, then the Audience drop-down, then Export audience, then Export CSV. Wait for the completion email, or download from More options, then Export history.
- Unarchive the ZIP. The download contains a separate CSV for each contact status: subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed, and cleaned. Import each file separately, or the import looks incomplete.
- Import each CSV into Sheets. In Google Sheets, use File, then Import, upload the CSV, and choose how to add it: a new sheet, or appended to the current sheet. Repeat for each status file. The File and Import steps are Google's documentation, linked from Mailchimp help.
- Check the status file names before you conclude anything is missing. Status lives in the file names, not in a single Status column. A Sheets tab with only subscribed contacts is expected, not an error, when the other status files have not been imported yet.
- Download within 30 days. Contact exports and their CSVs are available in your account for 30 days only. Only Owners and Admins can export audiences.
What the Sheets import will and will not contain
The CSVs contain audience fields except language, marketing permissions for GDPR-enabled audiences, MEMBER_RATING, opt-in and confirm times and IP addresses, geolocation fields, LAST_CHANGED, LEID, EUID, NOTES, and TAGS. They do not contain opens and clicks, signup source, purchase history, language, predicted demographics, or social profile data. Contact exports do not include email report data. Download email report data through a separate email report export.
For the Excel version of this workflow, see How to Export Mailchimp Contacts to Excel. For exporting only part of the audience, see How to Export a Mailchimp Segment or Tag. For every Mailchimp export method side by side, see the Mailchimp Export Methods by Destination directory. If the export looks incomplete, see How to Fix a Mailchimp Export With Missing Contacts.
