Duplicate Title Replacement by State

A lost title stops a sale, a registration, and a transfer cold. Every state replaces one, but the form, the fee, and the lienholder rule change at the state line. This directory puts all eight states side by side.

Duplicate is not transfer, and not renewal

A duplicate reissues the title to the same owner. A transfer changes the owner. A renewal extends the registration sticker without touching ownership. If the owner is changing, start with the Car Title Transfer by State directory. If only the sticker is expiring, start with the Vehicle Registration Renewal by State directory. If you are unsure which of the three you need, see Car Title Transfer, Renewal, or Duplicate: Which One Do You Need.
